CAMPUS SUMMARY
California Lutheran University is part of a 500-year-old legacy of Lutheran Christian higher education.

The Lutheran tradition began on a university campus as a teaching and reforming movement within the Catholic Church. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted a challenge on the church door at the University of Wittenberg in Germany to debate 95 theological issues. Luther's hope was that the Church would reform its practices and preaching to be more consistent with the teachings contained in the Bible. The Lutheran movement further encouraged people to read the Bible for themselves and to apply their own intellect in understanding it for themselves.

As a part of this tradition, CLU insists upon a free and rigorous investigation of truth while encouraging the moral and spiritual development of our students. The relationship between faith and reason is at the core of CLU's character as a university. The individual exploration of truth is only a starting point for the whole educational experience by which students and professors work together to turn information into knowledge, knowledge into truth, and truth finally into wisdom.

At CLU, we strive to provide opportunities to assist our students in developing their spiritual growth as part of the overall educational experience. It is important and intentional that these opportunities are made available for voluntary participation because it is our philosophy that students need to begin making independent and authentic choices of their own in preparation for the world beyond the college years. CLU is a place for students of all faiths, or those without a specific background of faith, to explore issues related to spirituality as they gain independence and begin to make important life decisions that impact their vocational choices and their development as contributing members of society.

The University's mission statement reads as follows: California Lutheran University is a diverse scholarly community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts and professional studies. Rooted in the Lutheran tradition of Christian faith, the University encourages critical inquiry into matters of both faith and reason. The mission of the University is to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation, and committed to service and justice. We believe the goal of higher education is to help each student answer three questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What shall I do?

A tremendous number of faith-deepening programs are offered through our Campus Ministry department. In addition to a Lutheran service on Sunday mornings and a non-denominational chapel service every Wednesday, CLU offers many different opportunities for students to express their faith. There are innumerable retreats, youth gatherings, service projects, and urban plunges every year. Common Ground is an informal candlelight communion service each Wednesday evening. There are Bible studies organized in the residence hall complexes, as well as one that meets Monday evenings in our chapel under the direction of our campus pastors. We have a "New to the Lu" group that centers around those who are transitioning into CLU and seeking to establish faith roots here. Other programs at CLU include Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Habitat for Humanity, and Global Peace and Justice.

CLU also sponsors a Catholic mass once a month for our Catholic students (who comprise 21% of our total student population).

When the time comes to make your final college decision, you'll probably be comparing costs as part of your evaluation. For each school you consider, remember to subtract the amount of financial aid from the total cost of attending in order to find your total out-of-pocket expenses. Don't assume that your out-of-pocket costs will be less at another college or university just because the "sticker price" is lower. An institution that costs less than CLU may not award the same financial aid package as CLU, which makes a big impact on your out-of-pocket costs.

The most critically important factor in computing total college expenses is the length of time you will take to graduate. The national average for first-year students graduating from the same college four years later is 17%. At CLU, seventeen percent is just not good enough - so we have a system of checks and balances in place to ensure that our students will finish their degree in four years.

Ultimately, you will need to consider the value of the education you choose for yourself. At CLU, we place a high priority on close faculty contact - professors teach all classes and advise all students. Classes are small which allows for discussion and investigative learning - the average class size is 22. And you'll be part of an active campus community with some of the largest, most comfortable residence halls anywhere filled with students who care about each other and where they're going in life.

You probably have additional reasons of your own which have led you to consider CLU, and you'll weigh each of these factors in making your final college choice. Remember that cost is only part of the picture. We do everything we can to award our financial aid monies in order to equitably help as many students as possible. Thousands upon thousands of CLU alumni can attest that affordability is achievable, and each one will tell you that what you get for your money is so definitely worth it.
