CAMPUS SUMMARY
Irvine Valley College (IVC), established in 1985 as the 105th community college in California, asserts that a high quality, accessible and relevant education is the right of every individual. As a comprehensive college, IVC is dedicated to meeting the lifelong learning needs of its students and constituent communities. To these ends, the college offers a variety of lower-division transfer programs, vocational and career enhancement programs, basic skills courses (including pre-collegiate courses, non-transferable courses in English and mathematics, and English as a Second Language courses), community education courses, and activities promoting economic development. The college commits to the allocation of its resources in support of this multifaceted mission. These curricula and programs are offered in a variety of traditional and non-traditional modes which recognize the needs of a diverse, changing population. IVC's educational programs, supportive services, and co- and extra-curricular opportunities provide an educational environment which allows students to meet both their short-term and long-term learning needs. In a time of dynamic technological change, students are encouraged to address the impact of the information systems on their academic and occupational planning. The central purpose of all programs and services offered by Irvine Valley College is the education of students who think critically, who become well-informed, culturally aware, competitive individuals who strive to achieve personal and professional goals. For students wishing to further their education, Irvine Valley College provides undergraduate transfer preparation for entrance into a number of diverse colleges throughout Orange County and California. In fact, IVC ranks within the top 15 percent of students who transfer to the prestigious University of California and the California State University systems. Among community colleges in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, IVC ranks sixth highest in the number of student transfers to the University of California, Irvine. Enhanced by the activities of its Multicultural Center, IVC enjoys the rich diversity of its student population: 0.4 percent are American Indian; 2 percent are African-American; 3 percent are Filipino; 5 percent are Middle-Eastern; 10 percent are Hispanic; 21 percent are international students; 28 percent are Asian; and 30 percent are Caucasian. Moreover, students are represented by different generations, ranging from high schoolers (4 percent) to those 50 years of age and older (17 percent). The interactions among students serve as one of the strongest bases for a spontaneous, well-rounded, integrated education. A beautiful campus amid orange groves, IVC is centrally located in Southern California with access to many opportunities for recreation. It is within easy access of mountain ranges such as the Sierra Nevada and San Bernardino, which entice skiers, snowboarders, and hikers. For those more water-oriented, there is fabulous surfing, swimming, and diving in the nearby Pacific Ocean as well as other water sports in the major rivers. Additionally, entertainment covers the spectrum from the theater to sporting events to Disneyland. On campus, extra-curricular activities include student clubs, theater productions, and intercollegiate athletics. IVC's superb geographical location, diverse student population, and outstanding curricula are significant attractions for prospective students who are considering a two-year college.
