| CAMPUS SUMMARY |
| California State University, Bakersfield opened in 1970 as the 19th member of the California State University system. Its role as the only four-year institution within a 100-mile radius in the area is a significant one providing higher education opportunities to the region's important economic and social center. The university is committed to the goals of a liberal-arts education and strives for excellence in its four schools, School of Humanities and Social Science, School of Business and Public Administration, School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the School of Education. The university is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
CSUB is located on a 375-acre site in metropolitan Bakersfield which is at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. Two hours away from Los Angeles and approximately five hours from the Bay Area, CSUB is centrally located. Access to beach areas, national parks, and other recreational spots are only miles away. The university is comprised of 30 buildings, providing classroom, laboratory, administrative, and technical support facilities. Some 7900 undergraduate and graduate students are served by nearly 300 faculty members with a student/faculty ratio of 18:1, one of the best in the CSU system. This close ratio provides students easy access to faculty along with a more personal environment for learning. Over 90 percent of CSUB's regular faculty also hold doctorates from major universities.
CSUB's vision is: By 2014-15, CSU Bakersfield will be the leading campus in the CSU system in terms of faculty and academic excellence and diversity, quality of the student experience, and community engagement. Realization of our vision will be advanced by recruitment, development and promotion of excellent and diverse staff within an organizational culture committed to excellence in all areas. |
