Home Schooling
Home schooled students generally fall into two categories. They are either: a) taught by a family member or b) pursue a home based education through "independent study" while enrolled at a public school or private school. If you complete high school through home schooling, you are generally expected to meet the same admission requirements as students attending traditional schools.
UC Home School Admission Requirements
If you are home schooled through an independent study program of a county office of education, charter high school, another public education entity, or a private comprehensive high school that is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and maintains a UC-certified "a-g" course list, then the path to UC eligibility and admissions is identical to that of students in traditional high schools around the state.
If you are home schooled in a learning environment that is not WASC-accredited and/or does not have a UC-certified "a-g" course list, then you will be unable to follow the traditional path to UC eligibility. Yet, you may become eligible for admission by examination alone.
To qualify for admission to UC by examination alone, you must satisfy the same examination requirement as students who are eligible statewide. You must achieve a test score total, as calculated according to the
UC Eligibility Index, of at least 3450. In addition, you must earn a minimum UC Score of 63 on each component of the ACT or SAT Reasoning Test and on each SAT Subject Test.
If you don't meet the UC eligibility criteria by examination alone, you may still apply to the University and hope to be admitted by exception. You should do everything possible to demonstrate strong knowledge in each of the "a-g" subject areas by taking SAT Subject Test subject area exams and/or community college courses. You should also take the SAT or ACT exam. In your application, you should demonstrate other skills and strengths, whether in leadership, community service, athletics, the arts or other areas.
CSU Home School Admission Requirements
If you complete high school through home schooling you are expected to meet the same admission requirements as students attending traditional high schools.
If you are home schooled through "independent study" while enrolled at a public high school, the courses you take for satisfaction of the college preparatory subject requirements must appear on the University of California's "a-g" course list.
If you are home schooled and not enrolled at a public high school or if you have not taken enough courses from the UC "a-g" list, the CSU campus will review your application individually to determine that all requirements have been met. In this case, you may be asked to submit additional information to document completion of CSU eligibility requirements.
Independent College Home School Admission Requirements
The admissions process for home schooled students is similar to that of students coming from a traditional public or private school background. Most independent colleges and universities will require a high school curriculum similar to the "a-g" requirements of UC and CSU. If you are a home schooled student and interested in finding out the admissions requirements for a particular independent college or university, you should contact the admissions department directly for more information.
Community College Home School Admission Requirements
Students applying to California community colleges must have either a high school diploma or have reached the age of eighteen.
