Contra Costa College is a diverse, full-service community college which serves about 8,000 students each term. Founded in 1948, with the first classes held in 1949-50, the college celebrated its 50th anniversary during the 1999-2000 academic year.
Located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, our beautiful tree-lined hillside campus is conveniently located near Berkeley in the East Bay across from San Francisco. Contra Costa College offers a comprehensive transfer programs for students who wish to pursue baccalaureate degrees, Associate degrees and Certificates of Achievement in technical education programs for career training, and courses for continuing professional education. Contra Costa College is widely known for its excellent journalism program. The student newspaper, "The Advocate," has won seven National Pacemaker Awards from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP), and has been inducted into the ACP Hall of Fame. The college also is the only community college in California to offer a Montessori teacher education program, was the first in northern California to offer a biotechnology program, and is the only community college in northern California to offer a program in nondestructive examination technology. The Center for Science Excellence is a model program to encourage and help minority students to major in math and the sciences, and to provide a structure to help them succeed and to transfer. Contra Costa College also offers an excellent nursing program to prepare students to become registered nurses; a first-rate dental assisting program; and a new program to provide training for Certified Nursing Assistants and Home Health Aides. Another special program CCC offers is Weekend College, through which students can earn an Associate degree in five semesters by attending classes on Friday nights and Saturdays. It is an intense pre-planned program of study, with students taking two classes during each eight-week session. Two sessions are offered each semester. |
