CAMPUS SUMMARY
San Diego Mesa College opened in 1964. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest and finest community colleges in the state and in the nation. It now serves approximately 24,000 students on a campus of 104 acres. The more than 150 programs and 2,200 classes at San Diego Mesa College meet the needs of students with various backgrounds, interests, and educational goals. Courses are provided in general education, lower-division transfer programs, occupational, and developmental education. San Diego Mesa College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.


UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
San Diego Mesa College has 6 Special Admissions programs collectively entitled ALLIED HEALTH. PROGRAMS. Interested persons should call the Special Programs Admissions Clerk in the Admission's Office (858) 627-2684.

ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNOLOGY prepares students for employment as an assistant to graduate veterinarians in private veterinary facilities, biomedical research institutions, regulatory agencies, and zoological parks. The program is approved by the California Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine. Graduates may become Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) upon passing an examination offered by the California Department of Consumer Affairs. Eligibility for enrollment in this program is determined by a special admission procedure.

DENTAL ASSISTING (CDA, RDA) The program is a two-semester certificate program which prepares the student for certification as a Registered Dental Assistant and a Certified Dental Assistant. Students must complete four units of Directed Clinical Practice working in private dental offices or clinics under the supervision of the clinic and college staff. The program is accredited by the State Board of dental Examiners and the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Upon completion of the program the student receives a certificate of completion from the program, and certification to operate dental x-ray equipment in the State of California. The student is eligible to take the California Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) Examination with Coronal Polish certification and the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) National Examination.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY is designed to meet the increasing need for professionally trained Health Information Technicians in acute hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities and governmental and private agencies. The two-year program provides emphasis in the areas of storage and retrieval of records, quantitative analysis of medical records, coding and indexing the medical records, legal aspects of medical records, supervision of medical records department personnel, and an introduction to health care delivery systems. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the American Health Information Management Associations' Council on Accreditation. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the national accreditation examination of the American Health Information Management Association for designation, RHIT- Registered Health Information Technologist.

MEDICAL ASSISTING This two-semester certificate program provides the specialized clinical and administrative training needed for employment and national certification as a medical assistant. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Association of Medical Assistants.

PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANT prepares the student for employment as a physical therapist assistant. The physical therapist assistant, working under the supervision of the registered physical therapist, assists in the provision of physical therapy services prescribed by a physician. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association and approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California. Graduates are eligible to take the examination for approval as a physical therapist assistant. Eligibility for enrollment in this program is determined by a special admission procedure.

RADIOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGY. The certificate program prepares the student for certification as a full diagnostic radiographer. The program will also include 23 units of directed clinical practice which satisfied the required hours of clinical practice. Upon completion of the program, the student will be given a certificate of completion (AS degree optional) and may apply for registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and for certification by the State of California. Eligibility for enrollment in this program is determined by a special admission procedure.
