Managing the Net Cost Parents and students work together to cover the Net Cost using tools provided by the college, including parent and student educational loans, and part-time work. The Net Cost is not due all at once. Many costs, such as living expenses, are incurred over time. Serena will be living at home with her parents while she attends college allowing her to reduce her costs. What follows is a sample of how Serena's family might cover her net cost. |

Serena Student part-time work during academic year: Student educational loans: Savings from summer jobs: Serena will also be asked to contribute $4,480 through working part-time during the academic year or taking out student loans if absolutely necessary. Serena may qualify for a Cal Grant A which she could use to pay tuition and fees if she transfers to a four year college. (Note: Many, but not all, community colleges participate in the federal loan programs). |
