(A) 2009-10  CCC cost of attendance (living off-campus): $17,094
(B) Grant assistance total:
(from a variety of sources: federal, state, and college)
Michael should qualify for a CCC Board of Governors Fee Waiver.
$624
(A-B) Net Cost to Family:
The Net Cost is the amount that Michael's family must pay after need-based grants are taken into account.
=$16,470
Managing the Net Cost
Parents and students work together to cover the Net Cost using tools provided by the college, including parent and student educational loans and part-time work.

The Net Cost is not due all at once. Many costs, such as living expenses, are incurred over time.

What follows is a sample of how Michael's family might cover his net cost.

Michael's Parents
Combination of current earnings, savings or a parent loan:

CCC would suggest that Michael's parents contribute $12,570 for the year. A larger parental contribution will decrease the amount Michael would have to earn on his own.

$12,570
Michael
Student part-time work during academic year:
      Student educational loans:
      Savings from summer jobs:

Although the family contribution is relatively high, Michael could still receive a Board of Governors Fee Waiver, but only if he files the FAFSA. Michael could reduce the amount his parents need to contribute by saving more during the summer and working up to 20 hours a week during the year. Michael can also reduce his parents' portion of costs if he receives scholarship aid. If Michael or his parents need to take out educational loans, the loans would most likely be unsubsidized loans. (Note: Many, but not all, community colleges participate in the federal loan programs. Of those that do, some do not participate in the unsubsidized loan programs.)
