Managing the Net Cost Independent students can manage the Net Cost by using tools provided by the college, including student educational loans and part-time work. The Net Cost is not due all at once. Many costs, such as living expenses, are incurred over time. What follows is a sample of how Marco and his wife might cover his net cost. |

|
Marco Student and spouse's part-time work during academic year: Student educational loans: Savings from summer jobs: Marco and his spouse will be asked to contribute $3,100 based on prior year income (this amount would be included within their academic year earnings estimated above). *See below for ways that Marco can cover the remaining $6,619 of the cost of attendance. Marco and his wife should remember that these expenses include most of their current costs, such as housing, to which his wife's income contributes. Marco may also take out student loans. Marco can reduce the amount he needs to work and/or borrow if he receives scholarship aid. (Note: Many, but not all, community colleges participate in the federal loan programs.) |
