Managing the Net Cost Independent students can manage the Net Cost by using tools provided by the college, including student educational loans and part-time work. The Net Cost is not due all at once. Many costs, such as living expenses, are incurred over time. What follows is a sample of how Sylvia and her husband might cover her net cost. |

Sylvia Student and spouse's earnings during academic year: Student educational loans: Savings from summer jobs: *See below for ways that Sylvia can cover the remaining $4,470 of the cost of attendance. Sylvia and her husband will be asked to contribute a minimum of $10,664 based upon prior year income (this amount would be included within their academic year earnings estimated above). Sylvia and her husband should remember that these expenses include most of their current costs, such as housing, to which her husband's income contributes. Sylvia may also take out student loans. Sylvia can reduce the amount she needs to work and/or borrow if she receives scholarship aid. (Note: Many, but not all, community colleges participate in the federal loan programs.) |
